From the moment we set off on our journey to Wycombe’s Booker Gliding Club, there was a real sense of excitement and anticipation among the group. As we travelled, the weather looked a little uncertain at first, but spirits were high. After a safety briefing and an introduction from the instructors, we were quickly into the heart of it - getting up close with the aircraft and learning about the controls and how gliders actually fly.
Once in the air, the feeling was hard to describe - somewhere between peaceful and thrilling. There’s no engine noise, just the sound of the wind, and you can really feel how the plane responds to every movement. My instructor was great, explaining everything as we flew and even letting me take control briefly. Being able to see the countryside from that height was incredible. We could even see the skyline of London’s tallest skyscrapers in the distance!
Back on the ground, we had the chance to help with bringing the gliders back in, ready for their next take-off. Everyone was welcoming and keen to share their passion for flying, which made the day even more enjoyable.
Overall, it was an unforgettable experience, and one I’d recommend to anyone interested in aviation. It really opens your eyes to what’s possible beyond the classroom. Thank you to the Merchant Taylors’ Company for making this opportunity possible. It’s something I’ll never forget!
